These are the questions that the Managing Director of the FVV, Dietmar Goericke, the Vice President for Technology of the ADAC, Karsten Schulze, and Adrian Willig, en2x - Wirtschaftsverband Fuels und Energie, discussed in a panel discussion with Handelsblatt editor Roman Tyborski on 11 November 2021.

CONCLUSIONS:

1. The goals of the Paris Climate Agreement must be achieved. A new study by the FVV shows that it is not the powertrain technology (e-vehicles with battery electric powertrain or conventional vehicles with modern combustion engines / fuel cells / hybrid powertrains), but the fastest possible phase-out of fossil fuels that is decisive in whether we succeed. 
    
2. As CO2 remains in the atmosphere over a long period of time, the decisive factor on the journey to zero emissions is the degree to which the various transformation paths, i.e. combinations of powertrains and climate-neutral energy carriers, impact the remaining global CO2 residual budget - regardless of which sector (production, infrastructure/energy provision, operation, recycling) the emissions are generated in - over the entire life cycle of a vehicle. 
    
3. In 2030 there will still be more than 30 million conventional passenger cars on German roads. Studies by Deutsche Energie-Agentur GmbH dena and BDI Bundesverband der Deutschen Industrie e.V. state that, in addition to electric vehicles, we need more blending of green fuels to achieve the climate targets in transport.
