172 honorary experts in the Federation of Industrial Research Associations (AiF) ensure that only the best and most innovative projects of open-topic Industrial Collective Research (IGF) are funded by the Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) // They are newly elected every three years
Every research project within the framework of Industrial Collective Research (Industrielle Gemeinschaftsforschung - IGF), for which funding is to be applied for at the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi), undergoes a qualified evaluation. The AiF and its member associations, including the FVV, organise a competitive procedure for the evaluation of projects. The practical relevance of the projects are of great importance, as the knowledge transfer of the results should contribute to maintaining and increasing industry’s competitiveness.
In the current election, 2.3 candidates were nominated for an expert position. 400 candidates were nominated in total: 230 from science, 170 from industry. All candidates must have extensive scientific expertise and experience in practice-relevant, application-oriented research. The FVV had also submitted proposals for candidates from its network of experts. 100 members of the AiF expert groups were re-elected, 72 new members took office. These figures show how attractive this honorary task is, as it gives the experts a deep insight into current development trends.
Expert Group 1 | Materials
Head: Univ. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christoph Broeckmann (Institute for Material Applications in Mechanical Engineering | RWTH Aachen University)
Expert Group 2 | Process engineering and energy technology
Head: Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Eckehard (Institute for Flow Technology and Thermodynamics | University of Magdeburg)
Expert Group 3 | Business administration and organisation
Head: Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Peter Nyhuis (Institut für Fabrikanlagen und Logistik | Leibniz University Hannover)
Expert Group 4 | Construction and production
Head: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Bernd Sauer (Institute of Machine Elements, Gears, and Transmissions | Technische Universität Kaiserslautern)
Expert Group 5 | Chemistry
Head: Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Dipl.-Wirt.Ing. Chokri Cherif (Institute of Textile Machinery and High Performance Material Technology | Technische Universität Dresden)
Expert Group 6: Measurement and information systems
Head: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Edgar Dörsam (Institute of Printing, Science and Technology | Technische Universität Darmstadt)
Expert Group 7: Joining technology and additive manufacturing
Head: Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Uwe Füssel (Institute of Manufacturing Science and Engineering | Chair of Joining Technology and Assembly | Technische Universität Dresden)
The 172 independent and periodically elected reviewers are organised into 19 subject areas and seven expert groups (Gutachtergruppen - GAG). The GAG are equally composed of experts from industry and science and meet twice a year in group meetings. The three-year chairmanship of a GAG is determined by the members of the group.
Most of the research projects of the FVV are submitted to Expert Group 4 "Construction and Production". The head of this group is Prof. Dr.-Ing. Bernd Sauer (Chair of Machine Elements and Transmission Technology | Technische Universität Kaiserslautern). Professor Sauer is also Chairman of the Scientific Council of the AiF.
In addition, the AiF has around 300 special reviewers at its disposal. Special expert opinions are requested in individual cases in order to supplement the opinions of the GAG members and thus the vote of the expert group on project applications in a specialised field.
