BMWi and METI conclude Japanese-German Cooperation Agreement for the promotion of bilateral R&D projects

Funding in the framework of the international funding initiative CORNET - transnational promotion of pre-competitive projects in the automotive industry: Electric vehicles (EV), connected and autonomous vehicles, alternative powertrains/prime movers – FVV/AICE pilot project under way.

On the occasion of CEBIT 2017, the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi) and the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) have agreed to carry out joint research and development projects between Japanese and German companies, research associations and research institutions within the framework of the international funding initiatives CORNET (transnational pre-competitive industrial collective research - IGF) and IraSME (International Research Activities for Innovation Projects by SMEs based on the Central Innovation Programme - ZIM) to strengthen the competitiveness and internationalisation of small and medium-sized companies in both countries. Both programmes are funded by the BMWi through the German Federation of Industrial Research Associations (AiF).

Part of the Japanese-German Cooperation Agreement is the transnational promotion of pre-competitive projects in the automotive industry (chapter 8): „The automotive industries policy sessions are intended to cover a wide range of emerging industrial policy issues such as automated and connected driving including security and safety, dynamic maps (3D maps), basic research on internal combustion engine, and next-generation electric car charging system. METI and BMWi explicitly wish to highlight that the sessions are to be initiated on the topics described in the Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) regarding industrial policy aspects of electric mobility, other alternative powertrains and automated and connected vehicle and other emerging issues within the framework of that MoC“.

The FVV has already taken steps to implement the new agreement and has spoken with the Japanese Research Association of Automotive Internal Combustion Engines (AICE) about a first joint pilot project on the sidelines of the Vienna Motor Symposium. The goal is to launch the planned project until the FVV 2017 Autumn Conference in Leipzig.
