The team "Power distributor from the paper machine" wins the Otto von Guericke Prize for the IGF Project of the Year // This year's finalists had convinced the jury with a particularly high gain in knowledge, but also with the great economic significance of the results for medium-sized companies
The German Federation of Industrial Research Associations AiF (Arbeitsgemeinschaft industrieller Forschungsvereinigungen) awarded on 1 December its Otto von Guericke Prize 2021 for the IGF Project of the Year. Three finalist teams presented their nominated projects with special innovative achievements in the field of pre-competitive Industrial Collective Research (IGF). The IGF is organised by the AiF and its research associations, and its projects are publicly funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWi). The AiF has been awarding the 10,000 euro prize since 1997. This means that this year there was not only the current finalists to celebrate, but also the 25th anniversary of the AiF Research Award.

This year's finalists for the Otto von Guericke Prize had convinced the jury with a particularly high gain in knowledge, but also with the great economic significance of the results for medium-sized companies: Five researchers - Sebastian Stypka and Wladimir Phillippi from the Centre for Fuel Cell Technology (ZBT) in Duisburg, Dr Ralf Hauser from the Fraunhofer Institute IFAM in Dresden and Franziska Bauer and Dr Stefan Knohl from the Paper Technology Foundation (PTS) in Heidenau - have developed an innovative paper-based material with which it will be possible to produce functional power distributors on paper machines in the future. Compared to the titanium sintered bodies used so far, the new "paper" can save a fifth of the costs and increase the efficiency of the electrolysis process.
With their work, this year's award winners are making an important contribution to a sustainable energy supply. This is because the project developed by the AiF research associations Institut für Energie- und Umwelttechnik e.V. (IUTA) and Papiertechnische Stiftung (PTS) makes it possible to produce green hydrogen more cost-effectively and with greater efficiency in the future. An important contribution to the realisation of the energy transition. Congratulations to all winners!
