Newsletter 03/2025

A look back at our FVV Transfer + Networking Event | Spring 2025 in Würzburg shows how valuable personal encounters and professional discussions are for Industrial Collective Research (IGF). The focus was not only on technical innovations and new research results, but above all on dialogue – across generations, research fields and industry sectors.

It is this spirit of networking that we have picked up in this newsletter issue: In line with the keynote speech of the event on the topic of »Carbon Management«, we present current projects on CCS and CCU, provide an insight into the diverse work of our members – for example through the portrait of Dr Katja Fröhlingsdorf – and inform you about upcoming network events.

We hope you enjoy reading this issue!

FVV Transfer + Networking Event | Spring 2025
Looking back at a successful event in Würzburg

Our FVV Transfer + Networking Event | Spring 2025 in Würzburg took place with a varied programme, strong technical contributions and numerous interesting discussions. The focus was on current research issues related to sustainable powertrain and energy conversion systems – from Carbon Capture & Storage and the comparison of fuel cell technologies to the optimisation of high-temperature turbo steels.

A particular highlight was the keynote speech delivered by Prof Dr Roland Span (University of Bochum), who highlighted the political, technical and infrastructural challenges of carbon management and the importance of a holistic view of energy and industrial systems for a sustainable future.

The event also provided a broad platform for IGF interim and final reports, technical sessions on components, systems and turbomachinery, and meetings of our expert groups. The high level of participation and commitment of the participants – whether as speakers, discussants or networkers – marked the event and contributed significantly to its success.

We would like to thank all participants and look forward to the next event in autumn – 24-26 September 2025.

FVV Transfer + Networking Event | Spring 2025
Keynote: »Carbon Management – A new political perspective resulting in new fields of technical activity«

At the FVV Transfer + Networking Event at the end of March, the keynote speech by Prof Dr Roland Span from the Institute of Thermo- and Fluid Dynamics at the University of Bochum was the focus of attention. His presentation highlighted the challenges and opportunities of carbon management – far beyond the mere reduction of CO2 emissions. Key aspects were addressed, such as

  • Defossilisation rather than pure decarbonisation: While CO2 remains indispensable as an element of industrial production, the focus is on sustainable change.
  • A holistic view: In addition to the reduction of atmospheric CO2 emissions, issues such as industry, electricity supply, mobility and domestic heat supply are included.
  • Technical solutions: The presentation will cover innovative methods of CO2 capture (pre- and post-combustion capture and oxyfuel processes) as well as the need for Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) and Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU).
  • Infrastructural challenges: Approaches to the development of multimodal transport networks were presented, taking into account the use of pipelines as well as transport in other media.

The full presentation is available on our THEMIS knowledge portal:

Shapers of the Future - Katja Fröhlingsdorf
More efficiency and less CO2 with data analysis

What does vehicle acoustics have to do with climate-friendly production? And how can an affinity for data be turned into a meaningful career? Dr Katja Fröhlingsdorf has taken exactly this path - from RWTH Aachen University to an innovative FVV project to working on sustainable supply chains at Bosch.

Her story shows how versatile modern engineering is today - data-driven, interdisciplinary and full of creative potential. If you want to know how research, industry and personal conviction can all work together, read on here:

Shapers of the future

The FVV is making an important contribution to the transformation of the energy and transport systems through innovative collective research.

FVV member companies are developing technologies and products that show that combustion engines are fit for the future. The younger generation of managers sometimes tackles challenges differently from their peers, challenging processes and established structures.

In brief profiles, we introduce people who are working to make engines, vehicles and machines more efficient, cleaner and more durable.

2025 Stuttgart International Symposium

For many years, the Stuttgart International Symposium on Automotive and Engine Technology has been one of the largest specialist congresses on automotive and powertrain development in Europe and one of the most important industry meetings in the automotive industry. Experts and managers from industry and research come together to discuss the latest developments and current research findings.

In 2025, the Symposium on the topic "Automotive Vision: Design, Technology and Sustainability" takes place at the Haus der Wirtschaft in Stuttgart on 2 and 3 July 2025. The 2025 Symposium includes numerous scientific presentations, some of those are peer-reviewed by SAE. The papers are presented in several parallel sessions, such as an exclusive FVV session, accompanied by an exhibition, expert pitches, keynote speeches by executives from the automotive industry and a panel discussion on the topic "How can the German automotive industry succeed in global competition?". In addition, the conference accompanied by an exhibition. Other highlights include business speed dating, the numerous opportunities to networking, and the evening event in the heart of Stuttgart.
